Chinese Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has a long history stretching back over 2000 years with the earliest materia medica, the Shennong bencao jing 神農本草經. Herbal formulas are personally tailored to meet your needs using either loose or granule herbs. Loose herbs are blended and you will cook them at home and take them as prescribed. Granule herbs are typically mixed in warm water and taken. Our physicians will modify and adjust your personal formulas at each visit to make sure your health needs are being met.

Our post-pregnancy care involves a tailored month-long (or more) herbal protocol for a new mother’s first month, or “Sitting Month” (Zuoyuezi 坐月子).  These daily herbal formulas are modified specifically for each new mother depending on their post pregnancy needs.

Western Herbal Medicine

In the tradition of Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen, western herbal medicine has a long tradition that stretches back over 2000 years. The materia medica of this tradition has expanded and continues to grow with herbs from Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Located in the Pacific Northwest we also utilize local herbs that have been traditionally used in Native American medicine.

Topical Herb Applications

Applying herbs topically is especially important in our treatment of injuries. We use a variety of soaks, poultices, wraps, and compresses using a variety of both Eastern and Western herbal medicine to help move blood, decrease inflammation, decrease swelling, and speed the healing process. This can range from foot soaks to finger wraps to help improve your healing. Many of these topical applications are combined with hydrotherapy.
